Green Card and Blue Card, which one should I use to enter Argentina and Mercosur countries?

A Green Card It is insurance for those who travel within the countries that make up Mercosur, for example, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay and the same is valid for those who come from these countries to Brazil.

It is mandatory for passenger or rented cars and is also necessary when you want to buy a car in one of these countries!

• What does Carta Verde Insurance cover?

It will cover compensation for damage caused to the vehicles of third parties, owners or drivers of passenger vehicles in Mercosur countries. This means that if there is an accident with your car in Buenos Aires (Argentina), Asunción (Paraguay), or any other city within Mercosur, involving third parties, you will not have to pay for the other person's car.

Insurance covers:

- Any material damage caused to third parties;

- Any bodily harm caused to third parties, such as death, permanent disability and all hospital expenses;

- And if necessary, it covers 50% of the lawyer's fees, for the insured party and any legal costs.

However, there are limits to compensation. 40 thousand dollars will be paid per person in cases of bodily injury, death, hospital expenses or permanent disability and if material damage occurs, compensation will be 20 thousand dollars for third parties.

As the insurance only covers third-party damages, you still need to have your insurance in the country you live in, in this case it would be Brazil, in case you also suffer an accident during your trip.

You can obtain a Green Card from insurance companies or consulates.

Already Blue Letter, as much as it is very similar to the Green Card, it is aimed at owners of passenger or cargo transport vehicles that will pass beyond the national border through countries that sign the Convention on International Land Transport, as is the case of countries of Mercosur.

• What does Carta Azul Insurance cover?

The insurance covers the civil liability of the owner and/or driver of land motor vehicles not registered in the countries of entry on an international trip, for damage caused to people or things, whether transported or not, with the exception of transported cargo.

Both owners of cargo and passenger transport vehicles must take out Carta Azul Insurance as a form of broader insurance coverage.

Insurance covers:

- Death, personal and/or material damage caused to passengers;

- Death, personal damage and/or material damage caused to third parties not transported, with the exception of cargo;

- Court costs and legal fees for the defense of the insured and the victim.

Anyone who does not have insurance on hand to prove their contract runs the risk of having their vehicle prevented from traveling in the destination country when they reach the border.

The Blue card must be obtained from insurance companies.
