World Blood Donor Day || Why donate blood?

The importance of donating blood is something you hear talking about everywhere. So much so that there is a worldwide blood donor association.

It is an essential “medicine” for urgent treatments and surgical interventions. It can help patients whose lives are at risk, as well as assist in very complex surgical procedures.

It's no exaggeration when they say that blood saves lives! People have accidents all the time. At any moment, someone may need emergency surgery. And you and your family are not immune to this. In the same way, patients with anemia, hemophilia or any chronic disease that requires constant transfusion also rely on this blood!

It is because of this that the Hemonucleus carries out tireless campaigns and strategies – one of which takes place on World Blood Donor Day – in order to reach more and more voluntary donors, doctors' favorites.

Only 1,8% of the Brazilian population donates blood. And more than 40% of that number are replacement donors. So-called “replacement donors” are those people who donate blood to a specific relative or patient. These donors tend to make it difficult to control blood quality and provenance.

Is donating blood safe? || World Blood Donor Day

And so? Is donating blood safe? It may be a silly question, but many people tend to have this type of concern.

Donating blood, in addition to being an act of life, is extremely simple and safe. After all, Hemonúcleo works day after day for the safety of both its patients and the surrounding community, this includes donors in general.

Donating blood does not pose any risk to the donor's health. Initially, a screening takes place and checks whether the person is in good health. It is a very rigorous screening and the information obtained is kept confidential, all in accordance with medical ethics.

Furthermore, all the material used is disposable, without any risk of contamination. With every donation, a clinical evaluation is carried out and the blood is sent to the laboratory. Everything is ok with the blood, it's time to separate it into several components and transfer the part that their body needs to each patient.

Donating blood doesn't hurt, in the same way that the amount withdrawn doesn't hurt the donor and afterwards he still receives a snack to replenish his energy. Occasionally, the body takes care of recomposing the donated blood on its own.

Is it safe to donate blood during the pandemic?

Did you know that, out of every thousand Brazilians, only 16 are blood donors? This is a very low number, considering that the ideal would be 3 to 5 percent of the population – and as we said, Brazil only reaches 1,8%.

Winter is already a time when blood donations drop significantly and all of this only got worse during the Coronavirus pandemic, when donations fell by 30%. Many people were afraid of contracting the virus and the blood banks were the ones who paid the bill.

Please be aware that the Ministry of Health has guaranteed that donating blood continues to be an extremely safe act, after all, blood centers are located where the risk of contamination is zero.

Furthermore, all professionals are properly dressed and scheduling can often be done online, as a way to avoid crowds. To donate blood at the Foz do Iguaçu Hemonúcleo, simply call the number (45) 3574-8020 or access email [email protected] and carry out scheduling.

Even more than with the pandemic, some precautions were taken and rules were added in order to keep everyone safe.

Therefore, anyone who is diagnosed with Coronavirus, is under suspicion, shows symptoms of the disease or has had recent contact with infected people cannot donate blood until at least 30 days after completely recovering. And anyone who has the flu or a cold needs to follow the same protocol.

Health care before donating blood

Donating blood saves lives and is a completely safe act. However, it is still necessary to take some precautionary measures first, especially during the pandemic.

First of all, the donor needs to be properly fed and rested. It is important to avoid fatty foods in the 3 hours before donating, and if you have had lunch, wait 2 hours. Regarding rest, you must have had at least 6 hours of sleep in the last 24 hours.

There is a maximum annual donation frequency, so stay tuned. For men the limit is four annual donations, while for women it is three.

The interval between one donation and another is two months for men and three for women.

Some hygiene measures must also be respected, such as keeping your hands clean and frequently using alcohol gel.

Masks are also our main allies, and they must cover the nose and mouth, not be too loose and must not be touched. However, masks do not replace distancing, which must be at least 1,8 meters.

The Hemonúcleo is open from Monday to Friday from 8 am to 12 pm and from 13 pm to 17 pm – On Saturdays, from 7:30 am to 12 pm.

Location: Avenida Gramado, 364 – Vila “A”
