Having been in Foz do Iguaçu for more than three months, researcher and biologist Benjamin Phalan is present on the Parque das Aves team in order to contribute to ways of preserving the various threatened species that we have in our Atlantic Forest.

A specialist in field work with threatened species, Phalan understands well the subject of reducing human damage to our nature's biodiversity, thus helping to maintain life in a better state in this biome.

What work has the biologist already performed?

Benjamin Phalan was previously a field assistant for a project monitoring albatrosses and other species in Antarctica, learning to use mist nets and nesting animals in Ireland, and even searching for an unknown species in Liberia when he organized an expedition in 2013.

In addition to being a researcher of temperate forest birds in Oregon (USA), here in our country he taught at the Federal University of Bahia, in a program called Postgraduate in Ecology and Biomonitoring; After so much international work, Phalan decided to dedicate his knowledge of conservation and preservation of bird species to the Atlantic Forest.

This is how the biologist put it: “I am passionate about biodiversity. Since I was a child, I learned to observe animals in nature and try to understand their behavior. What brought me to the Park was the possibility of contributing directly to the conservation of Brazilian birdlife”, he revealed about his love for his work and his desire to contribute to our Atlantic Forest, thus joining Parque das Aves Foz, which has projects and dedication to recovering more than 120 species and subspecies of this Forest, which are at serious risk of extinction, is the right step for the researcher.

Carmel Croukamp, who is the general director of the Park, reveals that Parque das Aves Foz do Iguaçu receives several experts from all over the planet, to join efforts in preservation methods, with research and knowledge gathered to strengthen the Park in its great objective of conservation of this biome.

In her words: “These experts come here with the purpose of joining forces, sharing new knowledge, and also learning about our experience and practical experience, starting to develop an activity together to benefit the environment”. All these partnerships are not in vain, in Foz do Iguaçu Parque das Aves always seeks to improve its conservation methods, after all the fight against the extinction of these species from our Atlantic Forest is not an easy task, but as long as the Park dedicates itself with your team in this great work, we believe that the difference will soon be much more noticeable.

A little more about Benjamin Phalan:

Graduated in zoology from Trinity College Dublin, in Ireland, with a PhD in Conservation Science from Cambridge, for his doctorate Phalan did field work in Ghana, Africa, studying the relationship between agriculture and tree and bird populations, in order to improve assimilation with land use.

The biologist has even been invited to participate in the select committee chosen by Cambridge University to teach Prince William.

With expanded knowledge, Phalan brings a lot of knowledge about the behavior of species in damaged environments and the effects of climate change, as Benjamin himself explained: “Species that have recently disappeared from the Atlantic Forest send us a sad warning – including the leaf-wiper -northeast (Philydor novaesi) and the northeastern climber (Cichlocolaptes mazarbarnetti). These are lineages that took millions of years to evolve and we have lost them now, under our watch. Without effective actions we will certainly lose more species”, this statement from the researcher reminds us of how many species we have already lost in our biome, these races that were once here, almost unnoticed, have suffered drastically with the destruction and alteration of their environment, thus completely ruining species that were once alive.

Even so, the researcher believes in the reestablishment of the life of more threatened species originating from the Atlantic Forest through the Parque das Aves, reminding us of the Alagoas choquinha (Mymotherula snowi), and to close with a flourish we leave one more Beautiful claim from Benjamin Phalan:

“We all have dreams. As a researcher, mine is to see this population grow again.”
