Itaipu Biological Refuge in Foz do Iguaçu receives around 90 new animals

The arrival of around 90 animals increased biodiversity in the Bela Vista Biological Refuge (RBV), in Itaipu, in Foz do Iguaçu.

At the end of October, the PUC-PR Wild Animal Screening Center, in São José dos Pinhais in Paraná, transferred 80 animals to the Bela Vista Biological Refuge, which receives new residents almost daily.

The animals always come from other institutions that receive rescued animals, such as the Environmental Police or Ibama. They are normally individuals found in a vulnerable situation in nature or because they are victims of trafficking, being run over or mistreated. From the list received, there are species that are registered in the Red Book of Threatened Fauna in the State of Paraná, such as the monkey-cat hawk ( Spizaetus tyrannus), the red-headed howler monkey (Alouatta guariba), the paca (Cuniculus paca) and the purple-breasted parrot (Amazona vinacea).

Among the newcomers, there are some new animals at the Bela Vista Biological Refuge, such as the monkey hawk itself, the devil owl (Asio stygius), two species of owl – the yellow-bellied murucututu (Pulsatrix koeniswaldiana).

In addition to the babies of armadillos (Dasypus novemcinctus), injured hedgehogs (Sphiggurus spinosus), otters (Lutra longicaudis), tapiti (Sylvilagus brasiliensis (L.)). After arrival, everyone passes through the Refuge's medical clinic to assess their health conditions. After the quarantine period, some go to the exhibition areas and some remain in the scientific breeding facility.

At the Refuge, there is a permanent concern to manage it in the most natural way possible, with the aim of reducing humanization and guaranteeing the dignity of animals that are unable to return to the wild.

In the case of the injured, after treatment, they are taken to the Biological Refuge in Foz do Iguaçu. When there are conditions for survival in nature, they are returned to the natural environment.
