Spillway at the Itaipu Plant in Foz do Iguaçu drains three Iguaçu Falls per second!

Six of the 14 floodgates at the Itaipu Power Plant, in Foz do Iguaçu, Paraná, are open to drain excess water, caused by the large volume of rain in recent days in the South region. On Sunday (18), the flow arrived to 4,5 million liters – an amount equivalent to three Iguaçu Falls.

The landscape enchanted tourists who passed by the plant. The spillway was opened on Friday night (16). Since July, when Paraná recorded one of the biggest floods in history, the plant has not leaked. The spillway is expected to remain open until this Monday (19).

The spill occurs due to excess rainfall located in Paraná, mainly in the Ivaí, Piquiri and Tibagi rivers, in the incremental basin, which also feed the Itaipu lake reservoir. The cause is the meteorological phenomenon El Niño.
