History of the Ferris wheel

Everyone must have heard the story of how the wheel was invented, right?

But what about the Ferris wheel? Where did this idea come from? What do you eat? How does it reproduce? Today, you will find out here!

The classic amusement park attraction had one of its first appearances in a letter written by a Roman traveler, when participating in a Ramadan festival in 1615 and riding the so-called “Big Wheel”.

Almost 300 years later, George Ferris designed and built the Original Ferris Wheel for the 1893 World's Fair because he wanted to compete with the centerpiece of the 1889 World's Fair, which was none other than the Eiffel Tower.

The building was 80,4 meters high, had 36 cabins capable of accommodating up to 60 people in each, and up to 2.160 people in total.

And a curious fact is that it was built even before the first airplane in history… well, these people were in the business of staying high up, right?

In the following years, as technology advanced, sizes and structures increased more and more.

The biggest Ferris Wheel in the world

Currently, the largest Ferris wheel in the world is the one located in Dubai, Ain Dubai. A very humble thing, with its incredible 210 meters high.

Its inauguration was in October 2021, and it surpassed the current holder of 2nd place on that list, the High Roller in Las Vegas, with 167,7 meters high.

Now at Brazil, the one that occupies the position of largest ferris wheel in the country is the same one that occupies first place on the list in Latin America. And we are very proud to say that it is our namesake, the Yup Star Rio.

And we’re not left behind in this ranking, okay? The difference is just the number of cabins, the one in Foz having 18 fewer… but the height is the same, that is, we are arriving, Rio!

We also have, in Brazilian territory, the largest cable-stayed Ferris wheel in Latin America. The FG Big Wheel is in Balneário Camboriú, and its highest point is 82 meters high with an incredible view of the coast of Santa Catarina.
