Athletes from 18 countries come to Itaipu Ironman, the only binational Ironman event

Next Saturday 27th, the second binational edition of the Ironman Triathlon will take place.

The entire route is done within Itaipu, starting in Hernandarias, in Paraguay, and ending in Foz do Iguaçu, on the Brazilian side of the Plant.

The route entirely within the Itaipu area made in 2015 was highly praised by competitors, and this year the competitors will complete 1.9 km of swimming, 90.1 km of cycling and 21.1 km of running.

It is scheduled to start at 09:30 am, and the organization estimates that 650 athletes from 18 countries will come to participate.

There is the possibility of the race being done individually or also as a relay, for athletes who have not yet completed the full route, but do not want to miss out on the unique experience that is the Ironman.

The format of the route is not the same as last year, but the organizers hope that the result will be as pleasing as the last race.

The first challenge will be swimming, starting in the Paraguayan part, in the city of Hernandarias. It will be 1.900 meters in a rectangular shape, clockwise, with three intermediate buoys on the longer legs.

The 90 km of cycling will take place in three laps, leaving the Paraguayan part of the plant along tree-lined paths.

In this section, the athletes bypass one of the largest energy substations in the world – the Itaipu Right Bank Substation.

Athletes will travel through beautiful sections of the plant and tourist highlights, such as the Dam, Lake Itaipu, Canal da Piracema and Mirante Central.

The second and third laps begin in front of the Visitor Reception Center (CRV) on the Brazilian side. There will be three hydration stations, with nine refueling opportunities.

The 21,1 km race, in just one lap, will start in front of the Visitor Reception Center (CRV), passing through Unila (University of Latin American Integration), the Cineteatro dos Barrageiros, the Mirante do Vertedouro and, at Then, along the Beira-Rio road, from where you have one of the most beautiful views of the plant.
